Improv Obsession

This is Stephen Perlstein's thoughts, tips, discussions, and reviews about improv. I'm pretending I know everything about improv. I don't. I'm just writing this stuff as an outlet for my improv obsession in hopes that it will help me and any improvisors out there reading this. Feel free to disagree, or tell me what you think in the comments. Donations keep the show going.

I showed up on time. I don’t feel like an ass hole today.

“I fill empty space with character and behavior until I have something helpful to say.”

On Improvising on the new tv show Trust Us With Your Life, “It’s as if I had been a cellist in the Philharmonic and I was asked to join The Ramones.”

“Relationship tells me how their related story wise.”

“Dynamic is energy exchanged between two people.” I think he said that dynamic is more important than typical relationships, best friends, father-son, etc. Dynamic is nervous father and comforting son. Adding adjectives to relationships tell you a lot more about what’s going on.

“The audience expects conflict so they find agreement delightful.”

“Scenes are a mix of the expected and the unexpected.”

“Fill out the blanks for the audience. If someone is speaking in a voice with a gender clearly different from their own, give them a matching name. The audience will be happy and laugh cause you will have confirmed what they’re thinking.”

“Scenes go awry quickly.” Meaning, if a scene is going poorly, it was probably going poorly because of something in the first few seconds, it’s not often that a scene will be two minutes in and the improvisers will just loose it.

“Character is what we give to ourselves, and what we get from others.”
